Staying Relevant #24

Hi WDTE Friends,

Thanks for joining us for Episode 3! As we head toward the end of Quarter 1, I wonder where the time goes. I recently listened to Krista Tippet’s Podcast called OnBeing as she revisited and interview with the late John O’Donohue, his take on time and presence reminds us that being and being present is so important. The podcast is very relevant for all of you leaders!

Ann Meyers was our guest this week. She and I both had adult children who recently were married! Talk about time flying! We invited Ann to talk to us about her staying power and how as a human and Latin instructor she stays relevant. Ann has taught Latin for the WOL Institute for all of its years, and before we came to Appalachia IU8. She has been teaching virtually for 20 years. She had the insights of a philosopher (like John O’Donohue)!

Here are a few of her takeaways:

1. Collaboration stands the test of time.

2. Most tools are just and old idea that gets jazzed up.

3. Be persistent!

4. Learn what works best for your students.

5. Join PLC’s on places like Facebook or with the WOL Institutes professional learning. (Contact us to learn about our Network).

This week Olivia and I also had the opportunity to share our views of innovation my with mentor and friend Dr. Candis Finan’s Delaware Valley University doctoral students.

Here are a few of the resources we shared:

1. Professional learning is the key to innovation.

2. Getting to know the strengths and needs of your staff helps them to navigate change. Because change is hard. (Check out S2, Ep #1)

3. There are possibilities to expand and be innovative that are not about technology! Like teaching Languages to ALL students.

4. Students can do amazing things when they have opportunities to expand their horizons. Don’t underestimate them.
