Hi Friends,
It’s Memorial Day. I hope you find some time to relax, reflect, and get ready for the summer. With school winding down maybe you have time to read and dream. Have you thought about what your vision of the ideal learning experience might be? Or how you like to learn new things? Is your school a hub for innovation?
We have been having this conversation over the last month or two in our regular meetings. I love the discussions we have at the WOL. So recently, I put Lauren and Olivia on the spot and asked them to tell me their vision of the ideal learning experience. And what it might look like in the future.
Lauren, Pat and Olivia wondering….
Here is an overview of the big ideas we dream about:
Lauren finds the transition to virtual amazing. She came up through a public school system and never really thought about another model.
Lauren’s ideal learning experience includes:Anytime
Anywhere
Everyone
While reducing the frenzy of systems!!
Olivia did not come from a traditional schooling model and her vision of the ideal experience comes from her background in homeschooling.
She wants learners to be able to pursue their curiosity as her son does as an 18-month-old.Curiosity
Experience-Driven
Multidisciplinary
No grades
No time or space
Pat thinks if we want to allow curiosity we have to trust that students want to learn. Inquiry is the way of the future. All the content is out there online.
What if there were:
Community-Based Classes
No grade levels
Apprenticeships
Lauren referenced this article by Dr. Bulter - that relates to how we are moving into the next stage of learning - from an industrial model to a more networked learning system.
Dr. Tom Bulter drew this on a napkin during one of the first conversations we had about WOL.
Can the sky be the limit!? The WOL Institute works with traditional schools - could we begin to be the bridge? in 3 years, in 5?
What is motivating your ideal learning experience for your people?
Here are some examples of visionary ideas in school:
Have you considered Place-Based Learning?
How about Authentic Assessment? Or No Tests?
