We Do This Everyday #20

Welcome Erin! We do science everyday.
2

Hi WOL Friends,

We hope you will join us in a warm welcome to Erin Siverd! We are so glad to have her join our team as a Virtual Learning Specialist. She comes to us with a rich background in Chemistry, and science. Her enthusiasm and curiosity have added a spark to our way of looking at things in the few short weeks she has been with us.

We all know that teacher shortages are on the rise. Every day I talk to an administrator who can’t find a teacher. It can make things downright unpleasant! I often wonder why we can’t work together to fill these gaps. I think a Network of teachers (World of Learning Network) with some time in their day for live sessions might be the answer. (Let me know if you are a teacher with a free period or an administrator who has a teacher with a free period). The WOL Institute is great at scheduling multiple districts on multiple time frames… we can HELP!!

Do you like the idea of a network??

Anyway! Erin is here to help us with the science and math shortage that seems most prevalent. People know we can pinch hit for languages - Erin is here to be sure we are just as great when it comes to courses like Chemistry and Physics.

Here are a few things to know AND takeaways from our chat with Erin:

  1. Erin started as a scientist in a lab before she became a teacher.

  2. She has taught Chemistry, General Science, Physical Science, Forensic Science, and Material Science (for 17 years).

  3. She collaborated with folks across the country through, ASM Material Science Foundation, to build a course called Material Sciences. It engages learners’ by looking at everyday products that we use, how they are made, and how we can solve problems using materials and science.

  4. NGSS standards were just adopted in PA and will help us bring science to life. We can learn by solving real-world problems by understanding the phenomenon. Stuff like - glass bending light or chemicals reacting.

  5. Kids are curious. If we approach the world with curiosity and inquiry - learning sticks.

Do you know what the cork in shoes is made of??

Have you met Gitanjali Rao, Time 2020 Kid of the Year - She is a scientist!

We are so excited to have Erin on board to help us bring the sciences and the curiosity and wonder that comes with the study of science to the World of Learning Institute.

She is also super glad we help kids anywhere get the courses they need - not just in Pennsylvania.

We all believe that every child deserves to have the courses they need to go out into the work or next level of education with the tools they need to succeed.

If you can’t find a teacher - for a World Language, Science or Math course. Contact us! pmulroy@worldoflearninginstitute.com.

Everyone means Everyone

We can’t remember what books we are reading… but we are reading. Happy Summer! Go to the library!!

Have a great week!

Pat
